Blue Ridge Mountains Elopement / Dee and Matt

Dee and Matt's wedding on the Appalachian Trail was such a special day. They decided to get married with just the two of them present plus myself, their officiant Julia, and Kathryn of Evergreen Era films. Dee was halfway through her pregnancy with Alison, who at the time was the size of an avocado, so we made sure to make a photo commemorating that at the very beginning :)

I'm a big believer that being intentional with timeline (leaving plenty of room to simply enjoy it) and choosing vendors that are a good fit will make all the difference in how a newlywed couple experiences their entire wedding day. From the secluded rental cabin they chose to Dee creating her own bouquet with loose flowers she'd picked up, every decision made ahead of time seemed like the perfect fit for her and Matt.

Kathryn and I met at the cabin late that afternoon to document them getting ready together before we all made the trip up to Max Patch. The weather was as beautiful as it could have possibly been for a September afternoon, with the sun peeking through the clouds and a breeze at the summit. Early fall sure is something to behold around here.

Julia has a way of slowing things down during a ceremony to encourage people to really take in the moment and its significance. Dee and Matt exchanged rings and sweet and silly vows they'd written themselves. Afterwards we spent some time around the top of the mountain until the sunlight was gone and the fog rolled in. We headed back to the cabin for some snacks and a front porch first dance under the string lights.

It's an honor to be a part of all the couples that choose me to photograph their big day and this one especially so. I'm grateful to call these two friends and hope these photos will always remind them how that day felt for them.
