Summer Kitchen is a small organic farm outside of Fayetteville, Arkansas. Mariah and Ira have 2 kids, 3 jersey cows and a baby bull, 2 dogs, 3 cats, 7 hogs, meat chickens and 200 laying hens.
They sell meats, various fruits and veggies, raw milk, free-range eggs, and cooked me some of the best dinners I've ever had.
My chores included collecting and washing eggs, planting, harvesting, weeding, cleaning out a chicken pen, feeding hogs, and taking cows to pasture. I learned a lot about sustainable, organic farming.
A few days into my stay central Arkansas made national news with a big tornado that claimed 35 lives at last count. I'm very thankful I wasn't in that part of the state and reminded how precious life is. Please keep those affected in your thoughts and prayers.
Spending time at Summer Kitchen really makes me want to have a (probably much smaller) farm of my own someday. I am so grateful to this family for opening their home to me and teaching me about what they do. Arkansas has a special place in my heart!
